there are so many wonderful things that occur when we sleep!

Sleep allows our brains to recharge and our bodies to rest and repair.

Short term memory is transferred to long term memory and connective synapses are built in the
brain.  A child learns a new skill during their play (for example crawling, grasping, using 2 word phrases) then takes a long nap or night sleep.  During sleep the new skill is moved from short term memory to long term memory.

Growth occurs- cells repair themselves and
reproduce.  Human growth hormone is predominantly produced and released during sleep.

The immune system repairs itself and
strengthens.  Children who have long
restorative sleep have stronger immune systems and therefore are sick less often and overcome illness quickly.

Appetite regulates- children who take short
naps appear to be hungry all the time, but take small feeds.  Fussy eating can be the result of lack of sleep.

Mood and emotion regulates- during sleep your emotional mind returns to a less-charged, more neutral state. This is important for ongoing mental health. A well rested child is a happy and content child.

To name but a few benefits of sleep.

Do not feel guilty for wanting more sleep for your child and for yourself. Sleep is as vital as food, air and water. Still feeling guilty for wanting more sleep? Here is a diagram showing the effects of sleep deprivation on the body (source- healthline.com).
