We know lots about tired signs, but do you know about the early tired signs?
If you are on the look out for early tired signs then you set your child up with a better chance of falling asleep easily and staying asleep for longer.
Early Tired Signs:
Decreased activity
Slower motions
Less vocal or more vocal
Sucking is slower or weaker
Quieter
Calmer
Appears disinterested in surroundings
Eyes are less focused
Eyes are not as sparkling
Eyelids drooping
Red eyebrows
Less intense staring at you
The first yawn

See some of these signs? Now is the time to get your baby ready for bed. It will allow time for you to change baby’s nappy, set up the sleep environment and very importantly do your wind down ritual. Your baby then needs a little time relax in their sleep space before they fall asleep.
Late Tired Signs:
Fussing
Arching their back
Irritable
Grumpy
Crying
If you see these signs, it is time to be getting into bed / cot / bassinet immediately. Some babies are very sensitive to overtiredness and can find it difficult to relax and unwind if they get to this stage. Try to catch them before you see these signs.
What happens when you become overtired?
The body produces extra cortisol and adrenalin to combat tiredness. It makes you feel awake and ready to party! This makes falling asleep and falling into a deep sleep very difficult.
When your overtired baby does manage to fall asleep, chances are they will only take a short nap.
Give your baby the best chance of falling asleep and staying asleep. Be pro-active!
